queer big brother in ur bedroom but dance

with Courtney

Course Structure: 1 × 2 hour movement session + 1:1 mentorship
Course Venue: Online
Course Dates: March - April 2021
Course Fee: Pay what you can (suggested minimum £10)

This course explores the connection queerness can enable through shared movement practice.

It takes the form of a facilitated exploration between all participants of identity and movement. We will ask: what is (your) queerness? who do you move (queerly)? and permutations of these questions as they leak into auto-choregraphic potential.

The outcome of this course will be a short film that explores queering videography and film.

This course is for:

  • LGBTQIA+ individuals or allies who are intersted in queer choreographic practices

  • Artists who want to integrate, or further develop, choreography and dance-on-camera within their practice

‘Queerness is for whoever needs it’ - said a friend of a friend.

This module will be broken down into 3 sections,

Part i. Movement Analysis / Discussion

Looking at the complexities of what is queer dance

  • Is it queer because a queer person is dancing?

  • Is it Destabilising hetro-normativy?

  • Is it about sexuality ?

  • Is it Dance gone wrong?

  • What is it to me what is it not to me?

Sharing references

Part ii. Improvisation

  • Guided meditation

  • Guided dance improvisations and tasks

  • Explore movement in your own space

  • Are there any take-aways?

  • A way to access embodiment - connection

Part iii. Autocours (Creation)

  • In your own time film yourself dancing in your bedroom,

  • We will come back together to share our videos

  • I will also speak to participants one on one looking at how we queer dance

Footage collected from the module will be developed in to a filmic documentation for the Queer Extension website (participants are not required to have their footage included).
